Description

Mepilex Transfer consists of a thin sheet of a hydrophilic open-cell polyurethane foam, coated on one surface with a layer of soft silicone, presented on a plastic film carrier. This soft silicone layer is slightly tacky, which facilitates application and retention of the dressing to intact skin, but does not cause epidermal stripping or pain on removal.

The permeable nature of the foam allows exudate or wound fluid to pass through it into a secondary absorbent layer placed on the outer surface.

The gentle adhesive bond formed between the foam and the peri-wound, skin tends to inhibit the lateral movement of exudate thus reducing maceration of the surrounding tissue.

Indications

Mepitel Transfer is suitable for many types of wounds. It can be used in combination with secondary absorbent dressings for exuding lesions, or applied on its own to give protection to fragile skin. It may also be used under compression bandaging.

Contra-indications

The manufacturers have identified no absolute contra-indications to the use of Mepilex Transfer.

Method of use

The wound contact surface of Mepilex Transfer is protected by a divided plastic film that must be removed before use. If clinically indicated, the wound should be cleaned and the surrounding skin thoroughly dried. A dressing should be selected that overlaps the wound margin by at least five centimetres but this may be cut to size or shape before removal of the protective film if required. An appropriate secondary dressing is then applied and bandaged into place.

Frequency of Change

The interval between changes will normally be determined by the degree of exudate produced but the dressing may be left undisturbed for several days on clean lightly exuding wounds. On infected wounds the dressing should be changed at least daily until the infection is controlled.

Warnings

The presence of clinical infection does not preclude the use of Mepilex Transfer provided that appropriate antimicrobial therapy is also provided.

Mepilex Transfer should be stored in dry conditions below 35C (95F). If exposed to direct sunlight, Mepilex Transfer may discolour, although this will not adversely affect the dressing.

Presentation

Mepilex Transfer is supplied individually wrapped in paper/plastic laminated peel pouches, sterilised by ethylene oxide.

Mepilex Transfer is available in two sizes as follows;

• 15cm x 20cm
• 20cm x 50cm
